Juárez

they said

she hunts now

with arrows of lead

instead of

silver

 

they say she sat

with watchful eyes

in the bus

that drove through

the dusty roads

with the music so

loud

it was almost the only

sound

except for her

whispered words:

¡Ustedes se creen

muy

chingones!

 

now

the men of

Juárez

know fear

like the women

who daily

wander through

that world

they know what it

is to feel

hunted

to wonder

if today is the day

someone

they don’t even know

will hurt them

just because they

are there

yes

now they know

 

“You all think

you’re so tough”

she said

“but we will

earn that

respect

with our own hands”

and the hands

of our sisters

together

we will

show them

and they will see

they all think

they’re so

tough

but now they

know:

they are not

the

only ones . . .
