Today I’m keeping it short. I have a sick toddler and I can’t be my usual loquacious self. So I’m posting a video I came across when I was reading How to Write Women of Colour and Men of Colour if You Are White by Kayla Ancrum.
I was humbled that this young woman already possessed so much talent at her age and had the courage to express it. I felt the power of her words and her pain. It’s only several minutes long and it’s well worth the watch. [Note of caution: the f-bomb gets dropped, just in case you’re at work] And thanks to Kayla Ancrum for her article and for sharing this video.

Oh no! Feel better Little One! And this was SO great! i cannot even tell you. The audience just is loving her, aren’t they? Good for them. She’s really amazingly talented. I really laughed at the two Korean last name thing. But her whole range of emotion is uncanny. Thanks for posting even though you had a difficult day.

Her talent makes me inspired to try harder. I could never get up in front of people and read my work like that, though. I have horrible stage fright, so her ability to perform blows me away.
So, as the perfect ending to the perfect day, I was 2 paragraphs into your hilariously funny new post when an eyelash got stuck under my contact, which then proceeded to roll up and lodge somewhere on the top of my eyeball. By the time I managed to claw it out my eye was red, swollen, and light sensitive. Ah well, today has to be better, right? Right? Oh wait, now my husband’s sick, too. Never mind. 🙂

Ha ha! For ‘ethnic minority’ characters this is all so true! Stereotypes abound.

If only writers would do a little research they wouldn’t end up making mistakes like giving a character two last names, from a different ethnicity. Hopefully, it will get better soon. Thanks for the follow!
